Amazon to compensate $309M to customers over refund practices

Amazon is set to pay $309 million to customers as part of a settlement addressing allegations that the company improperly handled refunds for returned items. The settlement follows claims that some customers, despite adhering to Amazon's return policies, were wrongly denied refunds.

The resolution establishes a $309 million non-reversionary fund, intended to cover unpaid refunds plus interest for impacted customers. This comes alongside more than $600 million already issued or expected to be distributed shortly, bringing the total amount of direct payments to nearly $910 million.

Refund practice changes outlined

As part of the agreement, Amazon has committed to implementing reforms valued at over $363 million. These measures include better monitoring of returns, conducting audits to identify processing errors, introducing redundancies for automatic refund systems, and enhancing customer support to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Despite the settlement, Amazon has denied any wrongdoing. In a statement, the company explained: "Following an internal review in 2025, we identified a small subset of returns where we issued a refund without the payment completing, or where we could not verify that the correct item had been sent back to us, so no refund had been issued."

Settlement details for affected customers

The lawsuit, which spans a nationwide class, includes millions of U.S.-based customers who returned items purchased from September 2017 onward but experienced denied refunds or retrocharges. Common reasons cited in the claims include lost-in-transit returns and system glitches.

Once approved by the court, Amazon plans to notify affected customers via email sent to their Amazon accounts. Customers will be divided into two groups: one that will receive automatic payments and another required to submit claims to access compensation.

This settlement marks a significant step toward resolving complaints about refund issues while introducing safeguards to improve Amazon’s refund and return systems moving forward.
